CAMP FACILITIES: SOAR has two major Base Camp facilities: one in Balsam North Carolina where we have rustic cabins, a dining pavilion, on site showers/bathrooms, high and low ropes course, as well as several gathering campfire locations. The other is in Dubois Wyoming, where we have similar amenities as above except, this base camp is a working horse ranch!

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Philosophy: SOAR believes all individuals identified with learning disabilities (LD) and attention deficit disorder (ADHD) possess inherent talents and gifts. These abilities can mean incredible success in adulthood once these students negotiate the challenging obstacles of childhood, adolescence, and a traditional education system, usually unable to respond to individual learning styles.

SOAR's programs are designed to allow students the opportunity to increase their independence while away from home. Independence is gained through self-motivation and life skills instruction. With this in mind, we involve our students in many decision making processes, such as setting individual goals, developing group guidelines, as well as trip and meal planning. Please view our website for further information at: Our Camp Website Link: www.soarnc.org or call our Admissions Office at 828-456-3435! Thanks, SOAR Admissions Team

SUMMER CAMP JOBS:
Being a counselor is no ordinary job and we are not looking to employ just ordinary people. When we hire staff for the summer we look for people that will form the foundation that we base our entire community on. We look for people that we believe would make strong, positive role models in the lives of our campers and be leaders and mentors within our small community.

The residential setting means that every choice you make will be observed and potentially replicated by the girls in your care. Do you feel that your behavior is role model worthy? We want counselors who are role models, but also not afraid to be silly and have fun! By applying to camp you are expressing an interest in helping children to develop in a caring, nurturing, and fun environment.

You will be giving up a great deal of privacy and comfort, working long and demanding hours, adhering to camp policies which you may find very limiting (curfews, time on, time off, lack of privacy, no smoking, no drinking alcohol, etc). We look for people who will not see this as a "setback" but rather as a "set up" for a great working environment.

If you believe that you have what it takes to lead and help shape the next generation of young women, then drop us a line or apply today.

CAMP LOCATION: YMCA Camp Harrison at Herring Ridge is located on a spectacular tract of land in the Brushy Mountains of North Carolina located between Lenoir and North Wilkesboro just 90 minutes from Charlotte, N.C. There are more than 2,000 acres of woods, streams, and trails centered around private, 140-acre Lake Broyhill.

CAMP FACILITIES: Our 12 log cabins sleep people bunk style. All have air conditioning, heat, showers, restrooms, ceiling fans and water fountains for your comfort.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Camp Harrison's stunning wooded campus provides all the wide open space and clean mountain air kids need to clear their minds and relax their bodies. Over half their waking hours are spent outdoors, enjoying land activities in the mornings and lakefront and water activities in the afternoons. Outside activities exert the body and the mind so campers go to bed tired and happy - but not before a few giggles break out next to the glow of campfire!

YMCA Camp Harrison provides a variety of adrenaline-pumping activities like the ropes course, mountain boarding and archery. Sometimes these activities require multiple tries to master, prompting campers to face fears head-on. The satisfied grins, exuberant fist pumps and cheers of teammates at the finish line encourage kids to try their luck at something else, face new situations with confidence, and configure solutions based on past experiences. Kids discover their competence and character when faced with adversity, and there are few feelings more satisfying than getting better at something. If you can get "big air" on the zip line, then maybe introducing yourself to a new person isn't so scary!

CAMP LEADERSHIP CIT/LIT PROGRAMS: For rising sophomores, the LIT experience is designed to teach leadership skills including communication, decision-making, and conflict resolution. These skills are taught through many activities from discussions and team building challenges, to speakers and hands-on leadership opportunities; all the while emphasizing the YMCA's core values of caring, honesty, respect, responsibility and faith.

Our CIT program is geared towards learning the leadership and supervisory skills it takes to be a future part of the Camp Harrison Counselor Staff. Through interaction in our cabins, leading devotions, team building projects, and teaching activities, these rising juniors get hands on experience on what it means to be a leader at Camp.

CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: Financial Assistance is offered to those who qualify and can subsidize 20-80% of the cost of camp for someone in need. If you are in need of a camp scholarship, please complete the forms on our website at: Our Camp Website Link: www.campharrison.org

CAMP LOCATION: We are located on 260 acres of land in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina.

CAMP FACILITIES: We have lodging for up to 180 people, a full-service cafeteria, swimming pool, lake for boating, fishing pond, hiking trails, full-size gym, game room, and multiple indoor and outdoor meeting spaces.

CAMP PROGRAM INFO: Our Summer Camp programs are designed as one-week residential camps for boys and girls ages 7-15. We offer six different weeks of camp, but it’s the same program, and all ages can come each week. The campers come to camp on Sunday afternoon and stay until Friday evening. They are assigned to a cabin group based on their age. Each cabin group will have 6-8 campers and one summer staff member called a Cabin Director. The Cabin Director stays in the cabin with the campers and provides leadership and supervision for that cabin group throughout the week.

Activities offered at our camp include hiking, swimming, boating, sports, crafts, games, teambuilding activities, rock climbing wall, and more. Additionally, older campers will have the opportunity to do our high ropes course, and younger campers will have a chance to visit a petting farm neighboring the camp.

Safety of our campers is top priority. We have trained lifeguards on duty for all waterfront activities, and all campers are required to wear life jackets while boating. During swim times, campers must remain in the shallow end of the pool unless they can demonstrate swimming proficiency by passing a swim test administered by the lifeguards.

Our Cabin Directors are hired through a diligent screening process. All Cabin Directors must complete a thorough job application and interview. We check several references and run a national criminal background history check on each applicant. Once hired, they undergo extensive, week-long training including certification in First Aid and CPR before they are put in charge of a group of campers.

It is our aim at South Mountain Christian Camp to nurture the faith of each of our campers. We do this through nightly chapel services which use creative teaching methods like skits, object lessons, and activities to teach campers what it means to have a relationship with Jesus Christ. Additionally, each cabin group will have a short Bible devotional time each morning while they are at camp.

At the end of the week, we have a baptism service for any camper who has accepted Christ as Lord and Savior of their lives and wishes to participate in the baptism service here. We never try to talk a camper into being baptized, and we make every effort to check with parents before allowing a camper to do so. However, when we are unable to reach parents by phone, we allow campers to use their best discretion when considering how their parents would feel about them being baptized at camp. For this reason, parents are encouraged to discuss this topic with campers prior to their week of camp so that they can understand and respect the parents' wishes.

CAMP SCHOLARSHIPS OR FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE: Financial Assistance program available for any in need.

Camp Carolina is about adventure and meeting challenges head- on. It’s about the simple faith that anything can be accomplished through determination and enthusiasm. It is a place where character counts and girls are celebrated for their individuality. It is a place where young women can gather without labels and challenge themselves to experience new and different things without the worry of judgment or ridicule from peers.

It is a place where character is demonstrated through healthy competition, hard-work and determination. It is a place where defeat is met with dignity and victory with grace.

It is a place where every girl has a voice and every voice is heard. It is a place where love exists unconditionally and encouragement is second-nature.

It is THE PLACE where your daughter will find her true self and will cherish forever.

"This is where it all begins..."
